Internship Experiences at Hamlin Middle and Maple Elementary Schools.
The opportunities provided by my internships at Hamlin Middle School and Maple Elementary allowed me to experience how a school counseling program works in support of the larger agenda of the school as a whole. I worked closely with my Supervisors Jennifer Mays and Kristine Campbell, along with other counseling staff, administrators, the dean of discipline, teachers, support and resource staff, students and parents as the occasion called for it, to foster personal growth leading to improved esteem, behavior, social interaction, and academic achievement in students. Demographically both Hamlin and Maple are Title I schools with upwards of 90% of the students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. They are some of the most culturally diverse schools in the local area. I feel extremely fortunate to have been placed in both of these schools to fulfill my internship requirements.
My internships afforded me opportunities to be and ally and advocate for students experiencing homelessness, sexual identity/LGBTQ, sexuality, neglect and physical or sexual abuse, in need of food or clothing resources, dealing with family issues - divorce, drug use or drug abuse by parents/family, cutting & suicidal ideation, at risk youth, peer conflict, bullying and harassment, self-esteem, goal setting, career planning, and struggles with academic achievement.
