Major Internship Site: Hamlin Middle School
“That Brandy came to her practicum already equipped with many of the skills she will need to be an effective counselor was quickly evident. Her experience as a teacher allowed her to easily establish successful relationships with students, effectively teach lessons in my Student Success Skills class, and productively interact with staff.
Brandy’s duties have included one-on-one counseling with students, responding to parent/family concerns, peer mediations, and lunchtime supervision. Topics she has capably dealt with include drug use, cutting, peer drama, suicide, eating disorders, and physical and sexual abuse.
Seeing a need, Brandy suggested we facilitate a 7th-grade girls’ group. The Esteem Team met for ten weeks, only just recently holding their last session. Brandy developed and taught a curriculum focusing on helping girls build positive self-images, set healthy boundaries, regulate emotions, and cultivate resiliency. She worked closely with the 7th-grade team to identify the girls who would benefit from being in her group and continues to connect with teachers about their progress both academically and socially.
Brandy has established a positive presence here at Hamlin, interacting easily with parents, students, and staff. I have no doubt she will be an outstanding counselor who will successfully deal with all that the job demands. Working with Brandy has made me a better counselor and I would love to have her as a colleague.”
